Why Notify?

Much of the inefficiency in public-facing government programs comes from miscommunication or uncertainty. Research has clearly demonstrated that SMS updates are effective at reducing this kind of public confusion. Some examples include:

  • reminding program applicants of upcoming enrollment deadlines
  • providing status updates on passport renewals
  • sharing progress on applications for permits
  • proactively telling appointment-holders that an office is closing for the day due to bad weather
  • broadcasting critical messages about unforeseen service disruptions
  • ...and countless others

Notify makes it easy to send messages like these and save time for both the public and government workers. It's designed to be low-effort for government to adopt, with an eye towards simplifying procurement and compliance burdens. Administering agencies can quickly assess the impact of text messaging for their programs, after which they can build a case to expand their texting program if they choose to.

Notify is a new shared service currently being piloted by Digital Public Ventures, in great debt to the original Notify.gov team, as well as the GOV.UK Notify team for their foundational work.
